First of all, not to be confused with their sandwich bar next door, Red Dog Saloon is a fairly new addition to the trendy Hoxton scene. With three branches in London (Hoxton along with Soho and Clapham), it’s certainly up and coming. Styled as an American barbecue diner, its aim is to epitomise everything Southern USA.
The Bid Red – 4 x 3oz patties, Applewood smoked bacon and American cheese, this was a bit of a beast. Even though I don’t tend to go for humongous burgers, this just sounded too good. Shameful to say, I had to get the cutlery out and cut this beast in half, but it was a lovely burger. A soft, tasty bun and four juicy, flavoursome patties, it was slightly better when I took two patties out, however I still rated this burger, added with a touch of Southern USA flavour.
I know this burger was going to be the death of me, and although ordering a side or starter would be suicidal, me and my friend shared eight ‘Bar-B-Q’ wings. The wings are gorgeous, with a unique crispy outside and succulent flavour that you don’t tend to find on most wings. Topped off with a fruit cider (settling the nerves before a big football match), it was a great meal.
Arriving at the restaurant at around 4pm, it was pretty empty, with an abundance of staff, so there was no problem in getting a table. Ordering was fairly quick, and the food came out sharpish. There was a longer than necessary wait for our drinks, and they had to be reminded which docks Red Dog a few points for service. A service charge was also added which given there were just two of us seemed a bit ridiculous.
With wooden décor, styled in your typical American design (you know, buffalo heads on the wall and what not), its surroundings are smart and modern. The restaurant definitely has a feel of US dining. Split across two floors, the second floor is a downstairs basement, with room to sit outside when the weather perks up.
Coming in at £12.95, I think this is a fair price point for a huge burger in London. Also, as they say, you get what you pay for. The wings are £9.50 which is a little over the top. Again, the service charge added a little more than was necessary but it was a good meal. I’d highly recommend Red Dog to anyone seeking an up and coming restaurant.
